Inducible laryngeal obstruction/Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movem

Inducible laryngeal obstruction(ILO), Paradoxical vocal fold movement (PVFM) or Vocal Fold Dysfunction (VCD) can be not only uncomfortable but quite frightening at times.  It is a disorder of the larynx which causes the vocal folds to shut when they should open. This can cause difficulty breathing and can be extremely distressing.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually by an ENT often in conjunction with a Speech Pathologist and may also involve a respiratory physician. A series of tests and questionnaires are completed to determine how your vocal folds are working. This may include breathing tests, nasendoscopy (a camera to view the vocal cords) and discussion about episodes of breathing difficulties.

What causes ILO?

There are many suspected causes of Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement. Nerve dysfunction, stress, laryngeal irritation from reflux, smoke, perfume etc are some of them.

Can it be treated? Why am I seeing a Speech Pathologist for breathing difficulties?

Yes! These problems are usually very easily treated, with a very few sessions required to make an enormous difference.   Speech Pathologists trained in voice and swallowing have an intricate understanding of the larynx and how to make changes to how it works using therapy.  You will be given strategies to practice and use in an episode of breathing difficulties.
