Swallowing

Do you cough when you eat or drink?

Do you have difficulty getting food to go down?

This is called Dysphagia

What is Dysphagia?

Dysphagia simply means disordered swallowing. It can have many causes and take many forms.

What causes Dysphagia?

Dysphagia can be caused by many things including:

  • Stroke
  • Vocal cord palsy
  • Head injury
  • Injury to the larynx and/or mouth
  • Head and Neck Cancer
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Ageing

Diagnosis

A thorough history of your problem along with a oro-musculature assessment (face, mouth and neck muscles and nerves) and  observation of your swallowing will reveal much of your difficulties. Sometimes a video X-Ray study of your swallowing (called a Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) or Videofluouroscopy) will be needed to look at exactly what is happening with your swallowing. This is completed at a hospital. A substance visible under x-ray is swallowed which shows where it is going, the timing of events during the swallow, outlines structures involved in swallowing and guides strategies and therapy.

Treatment

There are many exercises and strategies that can be used to improve swallowing. We can help you manage your swallowing difficulties and in many cases enable you to return to your normal function. Contact us to find out more.
