Chronic cough is just what it sounds like, ongoing, frequent coughing.
Chronic cough can be caused by a range of things including allergies, reflux, laryngeal irritation and habit. Sometimes cough will continue after an upper respiratory infection. This may be due to a developed habit, or ongoing irritation caused by the coughing itself. Chronic cough may also be the result of over stimulation of the laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve which supplies sensation from the larynx.
Chronic cough is usually very responsive to treatment by a Speech Pathologist. We aim to reduce or eliminate coughing by substituting other behaviors to replace the cough.
